The Future is Un-Friendly: Why TELUS Mobility Sucks So Hard

Recently I’ve had a bit of trouble with a company called TELUS Mobility. For those of you who don’t know, they’re a cellular provider here in British Columbia, and they suck balls.

I’m on a 3-year plan with them. I have always had a contract that includes free evenings and weekends. The problem is that they changed the details of my contract without telling me, and as a result I was being chargedfor my evenings and weekends. My bills were soaring from an average of $45/month to $120/month. It has taken several months and many phonecalls to even begin scratching the surface of the problem. I eventually figured out their mistake, and insisted upon being reimbursed. I have yet to receive their statement of how much financial restitution I will receive. But you know what? The money isn’t even the point.

The point is that cellular providers are committing highway robbery. Companies are supposed to serve the greater good of society by providing a reliable service at a reasonable price. As consumers, we should have control over the market. When did we begin accepting their terms so helplessly? My friend Jason was charged a $70 “Convenience Fee” just because he bought a phone from a friend and switched over. Luckil he had the gall to get it back, but what about the people who are too meek to stand up for themselves? Is that ethical? And where does that $70 go? It doesn’t take much labour (or a great deal of resources) for TELUS to make the switch. That $70 is pure profit, and it goes straight to funding fat bonuses for TELUS’s overpaid executives.

Well the jokes on them. One by one people are gonna just get more and more pissed off, and eventually they will either switch to another mobile service, or abandon their cellphones altogether. At some point we have to ask ourselves whether or not cellular phones are really so necessary, and whether they are actually worth the astonishing amount of money that we tend to pay through bullshit hidden fees. Eventually people will get too frustrated with their careless customer service, and they will just give up and switch to alternative means of communication (VoIP for example).

So I’m going to do my duty to the cellular market. I’m switching providers when my shitty contract is up, and I recommend to all my friends and family to stay away from TELUS Mobility. I have had too many problems with their service, and I’ve spoken to many other customers who have had similar complaints. I find their “voice recognition” customer service hotline creepy and unhelpful. Their dealers are slimy, deceitful and incompetent. Their “future is friendly” ad campaign with the cute animals insults my intelligence. Also, their products and packages downright suck. Don’t buy anything from TELUS!! And if you find that the other cellular providers are the same, then use a payphone. I swear, if they don’t clean up their acts, their business will only suffer in the longrun. Consumer satisfaction is the guiding force of the market, and by ignoring this they are alienating themselves from the market in a significant way.

Hey! I just had to comment on this one… I hate all cell phone providers.. My contract comes up in April and I’m getting pay-as-you-frickin-go because my so called $40 couple’s plan is more than double that every month. B.S.! I can’t wait to get out of it! Bah!

    • brian says:

Amanda, if you go with pay as you go avoid telus at all costs. i added money to my account about 3 hours ago via my web account and they deduct one cent about every 20 minutes for data usage and my phone has been turned off all day. go figure. i,ve had other payg and this never happened. telusnot sucks.

  2. Jules says:

I agree.. I’m also on a 3 year contract with TELUS and they suck.. but choosing cell phone providers is just like voting…picking the lesser of the evils really. I’m going for a landline once my contract is up.. and forget TELUS, I’ll go with another mediocre company!

  3. Leanne says:

I hate telus mobility so much and I wish that everyone else that is a client of theirs would realize that too!

  4. guy says:

telus is the greatest thief ever….on a family plan,i wanted to switch the name on the account..sure sir,it’s going to be 25$.ho by the way,now your unl.we and nights are going from 5 to 7$/month….and now when u call them…english is #1 choice,#2 choice..cannot understand it,#3 choice the same…and where is the french language choice!!!? talking about a friendly future…go to h….

  5. alertedeye says:

Yeah, they tried bribing me with a free phone the other day so that I would stay with them. I hope people everywhere start making the choice to demand more from their cellular providers. I’m just not gonna renew. It’s just not worth it.

  6. Ron B says:

    Yeah,

Telus Mobility did the same thing to me. Added services i didn’t ask for, then insisted i paid up first before fixing the problems… now they say i owe $2000.00 to the collections company. They’ve messed with the wrong people, including their own workers, and what goes around comes around. Their security is so lax that any person with the same software they use at their headquarters can get in because their network people are too lazy to change the default passwords! So much for your voice-print recordings being secure, as well as all your phone records, and accounts – their security is a joke. Who approved that voice snatching technique anyway? What ever happened to our rights to privacy? OK i’ve said enough, but who wouldn’t be p***** at them after the way they treat their customers?

  7. chase says:

telus sucks bigtime, BS we make life easy, i cant wait until my contract is up bsbsbsbsbsbsbs! thats all that they are

  8. cell phone user says:

This is funny, I like reading things like this, yes I am a telus subscriber, have I had a major problem, not really, I have had issues that took time to fix and cost me money, but guess what, they are ALL the same, Telus, Bell, Rogers, the SAME. I know people that have switched from telus and gone to bell, and rogers, they all learned there lesson that hey guess what, they got screwed there to, some stayed with there new providers, others went back, point being, bitch about Telus all you want, the grass is not greener on the other side, it is about the same…brown.

  9. murray says:

I think Telus mobility sucks big time , I have always paid my bill , days before the due date , and twice they have jerked me around for so called LATE FEE $ 0.84 on my bill , they also screwed me for their crappy web browser service and tried billing $ 3.00 for that .
Im in a rural area and the service is the shits .
I can only use the phone when im standing at a window , and use it on speaker phone .
I am not a happy Telus costomer .
I must have voice mail & caller ID because the service sucks so bad , so im billed 10 bucks for that .
I have found out that virgin mobile , and 7 11 speakout offers this for free with their phones , so im dropping the voice mail and caller ID off the POS telus phone and get all my calls on the 7 11 nokia 1600 , which is like 59.00 , over the 1 year I have left on my contract with telus , I will have paid for the 7 11 nokia phone twice .
Once my contract is through I will not be dealing with telus again .

Also telus dial up is slow and alot of times the mail doesn’t work , or you cant get on the internet . Yet another peice of shit service from Telus .

Oh , and one more thing,,, Telus , I think your PERKS Suck .
All the places they have these coupons for , none of them are in my area , WASTE OF PAPER :(

  10. James says:

WOW!! Here I thought I was just a whiner and the only one that had issues with Telus.. We had 5 phones with Telus. We resigned in october of 2006 on a 3 year term. From the day the phones were activated we had nothing but issues. One day the phones would work the next they’d be out of service. Text msging was insane. I would get DUPLICATES to the point I wanted to smash the phone.. My friends would complain about the service and being it was in my name I spent hours and hours on thep hone with Tech and Rentention. They had so many FREE promos it was insane. We switched phones over and over paid for new ones resigned contracts to try to work with Telus to finally be told to go away and were banned from the LOCAL dealer. I was told I was a problem client and they wanted nothing to do with me and to take my business elsewhere. the closest dealer from where I live was 45 minutes away. I phoned Telus (being the dealer is independant) but they didn’t really care. We ended up paying like $2100.00 in Cancellation fees and went to Bell. While Bell isn’t flawless it’s working out much better then Telus

Today we still have 1 account remaining with Telus that we wanted to Port to Bell Mobility. I phoned them today to tell them that the account was going to show CANCELLED for a day or so then Monday or Tuesday I’d call back reactivate it with a new phone # and my aunt would finish out the contract to save the $440.00 TLC fees. 3 calls and several stupid people I was told that if I PORT the number they CAN’T reactivate the account and that I’m stuck paying that amount of money. Does that make sense? I’m not cancelling it i just need this # with Bell Mobility and changing the # that Telus currently has to a new one. How is that cancelling? Yet they insist I better not do it until I speak to Rentention who of course is CLOSED.. You’d think a supervisor could make a decision

ANyways.. glad to know i’m not the only one with Issues from Telus.. Bell may not offer the perks or free calls on your birthday but they’re one HELL of a better cell phone provider for your money and what you get.. Their rate plans KILL telus’ hands down!

Shame on you Telus! Just wait til the canadian market opens up to otherr providers and you’ll have to start sucking customers asses to keep their business! ;)

  11. John says:

You guys are nothing but idiots. Telus does not manufacture the phones. They are a service provider. If you don’t want to sign in for a contract then pay the full price for the phone. When you port your number it has to be linked to an account. You can’t do a transfer of ownership and port your number. Who would want a customer like you!

    • Anonymous says:

      fuck you

    • cellphone user says:

just so you know weather or not you pay full price for the phone its still going to be on a contract unless you get one of the sucky pay-asyou-go phones that they sell so before you start telling people that they sound like idioits maybe you should do you research first dumbass

    • Shaw says:

Hey John, switch to Shaw or sodomize yourself with your cell. Thanks.

    • Ross says:

John – or whatever your name really is – you are the one who is the idiot. You are so obviously a Telus employee, apologist, or PR person that nobody will even slightly take you seriously.

Please tell your employer that I too am done with Telus when my contract is up in November. By the way you goofballs at telus (this includes you John) aren’t fooling anyone.

  12. kevin says:

LOL fuck you John u must be working for Telus yes everything u said may be correct except your last statement remember they ARE CUSTOMERS and should be treated as suck which Telus seems to have a hard fucking time understanding without customer service all companies will eventually fail so while your calling people idiotsyou yourself became one.

  13. Sean says:

Telus most definately bites the big one, the BIGGEST one, bar-none. After… oh I would say, 2 days of having my new Phone, I realized that the texting simply decided to not work. I called the * help number, and the voice system assured me I was connected and my phone was activated… No… such… luck. This is the exact same plan I had on my previous Telus phone, although I never texted on the other phone… however, now that I want to text, Telus simply decided to bite me in the ass and expected to get away with it, again… No… such… luck. I called the customer service line that I got from the internet, first I was greeted by a friendly female voice giving me roughly 40 million options to choose from in receiving help with my phone. I finally arrived at the text messaging help, and got absolutely NO information WHATSOEVER… so I decided to take the fight right to their fucking doorstep. I arrived at Telus at 3 p.m., Saturday afternoon, and talked to a woman who even though worked at a Telus store, had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what the hell she was doing with my phone. At one point she arrived at the search menu for music… yes… for music. It was now about 3:30 and I finally asked her nicely to bring me someone who knew exactly what the fuck they were doing with my malfunctioning piece of pig shit. A man came from the back and told me he had logged onto the system, reviewed my contract, and told me my phone was activated, I was not convinced… I needed proof. I said to them that I would be back in about 10 minutes, I went to get something to eat, and during the 10 minutes I would text a few of my friends, to get a better chance at seeing if I was able to get a response. Nope, luckily, raising hell at Telus is a lot easier when you don’t have to drive over there, I was right beside the store. I walked in and asked if I could speak to the man who told me it was working… his shift had ended, who was left…? Oh you guessed it, the blonde twat with the non-existant brain. I left. I emailed telus getting the message across very, VERY clearly, “I have been to your store, I have talked to every helpline you offer, I am practically dating your computer voice help system lady, If I can’t Text message by the end of this week… there is a very good chance I will walk into the nearest Telus mobility store, shoot every idiot inside, and probably torch the place, although I am very earth friendly, so maybe I will only kill the stupids, I am not PEOPLE friendly, thanks to your shitty company.”

Have I recieved a reply? No Sireebob. I still feel like justice has not been done in this situation.

So what do you guys think? .45?

    • Mogus says:

Telus stores have nothing to do with the company really. They just sell the stuff. Like if you went to future shop and bought a telus phone. it’s not actually a telus employee selling you the phone. The stores are privately owned. They’ll have the telus colors and logo but you always notice a store name as well like the one by my house called “smart cellular”. so if the chick was a dumbass you should have confronted her boss at the store.

Not saying telus is perfect but get your facts straight before you go off on a shooting spree, tough guy.

  14. XUP says:

Ha – I just did a Telus rant today, too. I did read however that if a cell phone company changes the terms of your contract in the middle of your contract then that contract can be considered null and void and you are free to leave. You should look into that. Get out while the getting’s good. And I agree completely that we have to stop being so stupid as customers and blindly agree to all the crap they try to pull

  15. We need to boycott telus says:

We should boycott them jewish C***kS*****S and then some they said it would cost me 17.30 a month and when thier done its 35.00 i was even stupid enough to get extra thinking that i could afford it my bills were 130 and 100 i bought mine in February and in April it quit working i was useing it after school and when i got home it said that i wasnt activated. im also on a three year contract. the only way to get another phone even with my phone is to go 2 hours away or to pay them 50 or 150 for a phone and stay on my three year contract

  16. Lee says:

My experience with Telus. I moved my residence so I phone Telus to let them know. They kept telling me they were having technical trouble with my order by they will call me back. I must have called 10 times..I am not kidding and I still couldn’t get my service of moving day. I ended up waiting for more than two weeks without my internet/phone because they ended up having to send a technician but they were all booked up. TELUS sucks !

  17. VERY Frustrated says:

No MMS (that’s picture/video text) for Smartphones?? You have got to be kidding me, are you REALLY that cheap?! Trying to force people to use data via emails… it’s so inconvenient! I’d rather pay an extra $5/month to have MMS enabled. F**K TELUS and all your f**k-around BS… This is the last straw!

  18. Frustrated says:

Telus are total rip off artists. They know that alot of people in smaller communities have limited choice to service and that they have the monopoly. When I cancelled my internet for a short time for money reasons while going thru a separation they never told me that when I signed back up that I might not be able to get internet because there were only so many ports available. INSANE!! WTF?? I thought it was supposed to be that everyone has access to the Internet??? they make us check the internet for everything, but then we can’t get it. If they had of told me I wouldn’t have let it go, I would have arranged something differently. I HATE TELUS!!

  19. Kevin says:

I dislike Telus now as well lying client care!!!!! They have messed my bill up so much all I want now is to dump them ASAP!!! I plan to dump them as soon as I can even before the contract runs out.
They lied about everything and I have no time anymore to deal with these assholes.

    BYE TELUS YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Martin says:

Just in case people are wondering if it’s changed, it hasn’t. Telus Mobility still sucks.

  21. Nick says:

Telus Mobility is a joke. We are suffering from a tower down again for the second straight week Trying to get through to telus to find out what’s going on is impossible. None of their help lines do anything . The worst part is that our volunteer fire dept , uses text messaging as part of our dispatch procedues. Hope no Telus employees live in our county need our services

  22. Mogus says:

I work for telus. Some people feel ripped off. I would be pissed too if some of this stuff happened to me. The majority of the people who work for telus don’t have telus phone plans unless they work for mobility and get the 50% discount. Myself I have a pay as you go because I don’t like signing contracts with any company. Let me get to the point. The majority of telus users are happy with their service and will re-sign with the company. That’s the truth. the people on this site are the few who feel ripped off and you have the right to feel angry but the bottom line is that telus is a decent company and the people who usually freak out and feel that the service rep. was a “retard” and that they got “ripped off” were too stupid to follow the rules in the contract. you should have read it before you signed it. this billion dollar company hasn’t actually took the time to single you out and jack you around. That’s not how it works. You made a bad decision in life so learn from it and sign with a company where you have the ability to understand how the billing works. Realize that if you break your phone it’s your own fault. We all know that one person who goes through 3-5 blackberrys because they’re made “poorly” or defective while everyone else knows how to take care of their personal property and do fine with just the one. It’s not Telus, it’s you. (ok, sometimes it’s telus but I gotta say 99% of the time its you)

That being said I do hate the fact that they outsource their jobs to the Philippines and other countries. The employees they do keep over here are treated reasonably well i think and it’s a decent place to work if you get hired.

    • Maevre says:

Hey, if you still work there, can I call your extension and have you help me with my problem? So far I’ve had about six nice people and thirteen people who yelled at me even though it’s pretty obvious that this is Telus’ mistake, and all the nice people have told me that, too.

Made the mistake of having our three numbers ported over to another company 4 days before our contract was up. Now Telus is charging us $100 for each number, basically $25 per day times 3! Plus they are keeping what I paid for the 11 days between the contract end date and the end of the billing period. Way to go Telus! another customer lost forever.
